water, Suez Lyonnaise des eauxSuez Lyonnaise des Eaux Selected for Johannesburg (South Africa) Water and Wastewater Management Contract

Following an international tender, Lyonnaise des Eaux (Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux Group) announced today it has been selected as preferred bidder to manage water and wastewater services for the Greater Johannesburg (3.5 million inhabitants).

The five-year management contract will cover the Metro's five municipal water and wastewater structures being brought into a single Utility organization. It will encompass the management of water and wastewater services, billing and customer services as well as extensive training and capital expenditure programs.

The main objectives of the contract are to improve the services rendered to customers, the Metro's infrastructure, the local environment and deliver a fully capacitated and sustainable Utility organization.

Key issues involve the provision of adequate water and wastewater services to low income communities, the reduction of non-revenue water and the empowerment and training of previously disadvantaged South African individuals in the Utility organization.

Gerard Payen, Chairman and CEO of the Water Division, Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux says: "Lyonnaise des Eaux was able to demonstrate excellent track records on customer services and satisfaction, on managing effectively capital expenditure programs, on improving the environment and on delivering services in low income areas. We look forward to a succesful partnership with the city of Johannesburg and to actively contribute in the City's project of making it a world-class African metropolis."

With a workforce exceeding 2500 employees, Johannesburg's existing Utility organization has annual sales of Rand 1.3 billion (Euro 200 million) and covers a service area of over 3 million inhabitants, about 0.5 million connections and water and wastewater networks of about 8000 Km length each.

Lyonnaise des Eaux operates in South Africa through its local subsidiary Water and Sanitation Services South Africa (WSSA). It runs a 25-year concession in Queenstown and provides water and wastewater services to over 2 million people in the provinces of Kwazulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Northern Province and Gauteng.

WSSA also leads in the implementation of the innovative BoTT projects (Build, Operate, Train, Transfer) to supply water services to low-income communities in Eastern Cape and Northern Province, in partnership with South Africa's Department of Water Affairs and Forestry.

Lyonnaise des Eaux, world leader in water management services, currently supplies over 107 million people with drinking water and wastewater services throughout the world for large cities including Buenos Aires, Atlanta, Manila, Casablanca and Sydney. Lyonnaise des Eaux controls the entire water cycle: water resources management, drinking water treatment, wastewater treatment and sludge treatment. Lyonnaise des Eaux is a subsidiary of Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux Group.
