United Water wins wastewater management contract in Gary, Indiana - USA

In association with its Indianapolis Partner, IWC, United Water Services (UWS), a 50/50 joint venture between Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux and the American company United Water Resources, has been awarded the municipal wastewater management contract for Gary, Indiana, situated close to Chicago. This 10-year contract represents total revenues of approximately US$ 100 million. The contract calls for United Water Services to operate, on behalf of its partnership with IWC, a network for the collection and treatment of wastewater for this urban population of 120,000.

Gérard Mestrallet, Chief Executive Officer of Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux stated « We are very encouraged by the success of our United Water Services joint venture which has gained momentum the last several months. »

This contract is United Water Services’ fourth success over the past 6 months. UWS was awarded a ten-year contract extension to its wastewater management contract for Indianapolis, Indiana (population 1 million) at the end of last year. Additionally, in January 1998, it won the wastewater services contract for Milwaukee, Wisconsin (population 1.2 million) and in March 1998 it won the contract to build and manage an ultrafiltration plant in San Antonio, Texas.

In addition to its 50% ownership of United Water Services, Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux is United Water Resources’ largest single shareholder, with a 28% holding.

« Water-related businesses are one of Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux’s four core businesses, and we expect to see continued growth in this sector in 1998 » Gérard Mestrallet stated.
