Kemira Chemicals makes further investments for the environment

The Rheinberg ferric chloride production plant in Germany and the Pori ferric sulphate production plant in Finland, both belonging to the Kemira Chemicals business unit Kemwater, are investing further in their coagulants manufacturing plants for water tre

The Rheinberg plant, acquired from Solvay on 1 January this year, is expanding its production capacity in order to replace current production in Antwerp, Belgium. The Antwerp plant will as earlier announced be closed down by the end of 2000. The new production, which means a doubling of the capacity in Rheinberg, will be put into operation by the fourth quarter next year and has new production technology considerably reducing energy consumption and effluents. The investment amounts to a total of DEM 5.3 million (EUR 2.7 million).

The Pori investment concerns manufacturing of Kemwater PIX-322, a ferric sulphate with very low manganese content. The process recycles a by-product from titanium dioxide production as raw material, and new production technology from Kemwater makes it possible to produce a very pure ferric coagulant suitable for drinking water treatment. Other advantages in the drinking water treatment process are no need for a special manganese reduction step and high removal of organic material, which in turn also considerably increases the operating life of the activated carbon filters in the drinking water plant. High removal efficiency of organic matter also reduces the need for disinfectants such as chlorine. The investment amounts to a total of FIM 8 million (EUR 1.3 million).

“These investments are a further step in the Kemira Chemicals new “Vision of Green Chemistry”, which focuses on water management, recycling and other environmental issues”, says Yrjö Sipilä, President of Kemira Chemicals Oy.
