Anglian Water launches “h2go” - a new competitive water business

Anglian Water has appointed ex-gas regulator Clare Spottiswoode as chairman of a new water management company, h2go. This marks a direct response to growing calls for increased water competition by Britain’s biggest water users.

The new business will accelerate water competition in seeking profitable new business opportunities outside the Anglian Water region. h2go will offer large industrial customers an independent, tailor-made, low-cost package which could include waste-water handling, recycling and special water treatment services on site.

Anglian Water chief executive Chris Mellor, said he was confident that h2go would meet its target of £30 million turnover within three years by making the most of opportunities under the current regime, but urged the Government to do more to establish open competition in the UK water market.

“Competition will deliver lower prices and better service for customers “, said Chris, “ but it needs commitment from the Government within an established framework and working to an agreed timetable. h2go will give us a sound platform to shape the competitive market and demonstrate to the Government that water competition is a good thing for customers.”

Speaking at the launch, Clare Spottiswoode said: “Increased choice through competition has delivered price cuts for gas and electricity customers. Many large users are now asking for the same for water. h2go is well positioned to service this demand and is already working with large customers outside the Anglian Water region.”

Andrew Jessop, managing director of h2go will be writing to more than 200 large industrial customers in the next few days publicising the new services offered by h2go. h2go will service the changing needs of industrial and commercial customers without relying on existing utility infrastructure.
