Vivendi Water Systems wins order worth 280 million euros in Abu Dhabi

Sidem (Vivendi Water Systems), the world leader in sea water desalination techniques, has won a substantial commission from Total Tractebel EPC Company. Worth 280 million euros, this order forms part of an outsourcing contract for the production of electricity and drinking water at the Taweelah site in Abu Dhabi. The equipment will increase the site's capacity to 1,350 MW of electricity and to 385,000 cubic meters per day of drinking water.

Sidem will supply 14 units with a capacity of 17,150 cubic meters per day (for a total capacity of 240,000 cu.m/day). The process selected is desalination by multiple effect and ejectocompression, which was developed by Sidem. This choice confirms the company's competitiveness and technical advance in the field. The new Taweelah A1 production facility will be the biggest in the world to use this process, which has already proven successful at many Sidem-equipped facilities. Two units of a similar capacity were recently brought on stream at the Umm Al Nar site, also in Abu Dhabi.

The contract calls for increasing the capacity of four units from 130,000 to 145,000 cu.m./day (using the multistage flash technique). Commissioned between 1990 and 1994, these units were built by Sidem.

Furthermore, Sidem is pursuing the construction of two units in the Emirate of Sharjah, which are due to start operation in April 2001. These units will reach a capacity of 23,000 cu.m/day each, using the same technology.

Vivendi Water Systems, which also offers desalination membrane techniques, is a Vivendi Environnement subsidiary.
