Ondeo (SUEZ) signs its first wastewater contract in Cork, Ireland

Ondeo (SUEZ) announced it has signed a wastewater contract in the Republic of Ireland. An Ondeo consortium has been chosen by Cork Corporation, in the Republic of Ireland, to design, build and operate a €70 million waste water treatment plant to serve the city. The project is the first to be won by Ondeo in the Republic of Ireland.

Ondeo Degrémont will be responsible for designing and building the wastewater works at Carrigrennan, Little Island and in association with Ondeo Services will operate and maintain them through the 20 year operating period. The plant will serve a population equivalent of 440,000, with industrial flows constituting about 50 % of the total volume treated.

The project is the final phase of the city of Cork’s € 270 million main drainage scheme, the largest such project yet undertaken in the state. By 2004, the scheme will collect the entire city’s domestic waste water and pipe it to the lower harbour area for treatment. The new works will incorporate some of the most technologically advanced waste water treatment processes that are expected to significant improve the quality of the River Lee. The cleaned-up water it creates will be discharged safely into the sea, while sludge from the treatment process will be turned into a dry granular material suitable as a fertilizer and soil conditioner.

An additional benefit of the new treatment works and main drainage scheme is that it will encourage industrial and commercial growth in Cork City and the surrounding areas.

Commenting on the selection, Ondeo Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Gérard Payen, said: “Ondeo assembled a team that brings unique capabilities in design, construction and long-term operation of wastewater services to develop environmentally-driven, cost-effective solutions. With the Cork Corporation, we will provide the people of Cork with a state of the art waste water treatment plant that will enhance and protect the environment of Cork for future generations.”

Ondeo is the premier water-related solution provider, supplying 115 million consumers with water and wastewater services, providing services to 60,000 industrial customers, and has built more than 10,000 water treatment plants world-wide. Ondeo comprises 4 main companies: Ondeo Services, Ondeo Nalco, Ondeo Degrémont and Ondeo Industrial Solutions. Ondeo is a wholly-owned subsidiary of SUEZ.
