Cranfield University is opening a unique research facility for the water industry. Located at the University's sewage treatment works, the new Pilot-Plant Hall will be opened on Wednesday 6, at 4pm by Mr John Sexton, Chairman of the UK Water Industry Research Limited (UKWIR).

The Pilot-Plant Hall is effectively a cathedral to novel process technologies. The Hall with its high ceiling will accommodate tall test rigs that can be fed with a supply of partially settled sewage. The purpose-built facility features 12 autonomous research bays where processes are evaluated together with two communal work areas. The Hall will also facilitate continuous on-line toxicity and water quality measuring using the latest technology.

The establishment of this research facility marks yet another stage in the development of Cranfield' s School of Water Sciences which is at the forefront of developing novel processes-such as membrane bioreactors (MBRs)-in partnership with the water industry. The opening of the Hall follows on from Water Sciences' award of an Engineering and Physical Sciences' (EPSRC) "Platform" grant in recognition of its internationally respected research work.

Professor Tom Stephenson, Head of the School of Water Sciences, comments "Cranfield University already offers many superb research facilities to industry. The new Pilot-Plant Hall means we can offer something that no other European university operates. The Pilot-Plant Hall is a purpose built environment where our researchers will continue to develop and appraise process technologies for the international water sector."
