City takes over approval of domestic wastewater systems

Water and Wastwater Programm Pages

The City of Valdez and the Department of Environmental Conservation announced today that the state has delegated full responsibility to the City for approval of conventional and alternate domestic wastewater systems serving single family homes and duplexes. The delegation also includes conventional systems serving a single commercial building that generated no more than 500 gallons of domestic wastewater per day.

Dave Dengel, the City Manager said, "Having this authority means a lot for the future development of the City. Domestic wastewater systems are an integral part of the overall development of the community, and it’s important we have control over them."

Janice Adair, the Director of Environmental Health for the DEC said, "We’ve been discussing this with the City for quite a while and are really pleased to see our joint efforts come to fruition."

The State will still approve extension of sewer main lines as well as run the certified installer program.
